Radar to improve port safety

Neubiberg (Germany), March 24, 2026 – Symeo will once again be exhibiting at the port logistics trade fair TOC Europe from 19 to 21 May 2026, which will be held at Messe Hamburg this year. At exhibition stand B114 in hall B6, Symeo will be presenting itself as a partner for 1D radar solutions in safety-critical port applications. The leading manufacturer of industrial radar sensors is presenting the LPR-SAFE system, a distance measurement solution for certified functional safety. Symeo will also be providing information on the state of the art in high-resolution imaging radar technology and the applications it supports.

The step towards functional safety: radar for certified crane collision prevention

The LPR-SAFE demonstrator shows how radar now provides measurements for the first time that enable certified safety applications on lifting and conveying equipment. This means that collision prevention solutions for harbor cranes, such as ASC (Automated Stacking Cranes) or ship-to-shore cranes, can be equipped with functional safety. LPR-SAFE consists of two redundant radar measuring sections that transmit distance values to a fail-safe Siemens S7 PLC, where the measured distances are checked for plausibility in a certified function block (compliant with EN ISO 13849 PLd).

The port as a digital twin

Symeo is not only taking part in TOC Europe to establish itself as a technology partner for port operators. The company is also looking for partners to develop new radar applications for ports and container terminals. The technology developed by Symeo in the field of high-resolution imaging radar can be used to capture digital twins of the infrastructure or current warehouse situations and use them to control movements.
